As smooth and slick as a well-rehearsed routine, it’s hard to believe The Humorist is stand-up comic Russell Kane’s debut novel, the anti-hero of which is Benjamin White, a universally loathed comedy critic.

Benjamin was born without any human empathy but with the ability to recognize and clinically dissect anything remotely funny, and his devastating deconstructions make him the most hated character on the stand up circuit.

When this detestable man decides to perform his own routine, everyone is there hoping to see him fail: unfortunately for them, he has learned how to be fatally funny. This surreal satire however will not make you die laughing, although it might raise a wry smile ( )
