I haven't read Ursula LeGuin's other stuff, but Tenar in Tombs of Atuan and Tehanu is a great character--especially in Tehanu where she is an old woman. If only I am that strong when I am that old! ... et al.

Tigana has wizards, too. It's easy to forget as they are not of the swashbuckling kind. It's a VERY good book.
... I didn't exactly buy them, but today's mail brought two things from BookMooch: The Tombs of Atuan by Ursula K. Le Guin and Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquirel. LeGuin's Earthsea series has a great heroine - although she doesn't appear until the second book (Tombs of Atuan).
I'm about 3/4 of the way through The Mists of Avalon, which is a retelling of the King Arthur story from the viewpoint of the female characters. The characters are very well ... Not yet mentioned: Beau Geste; Spiller, from The Borrowers Afield et al.; Snufkin, from To ... ... there's evil wizards and some dragons as well, hehe. But it's a prerequisite to read the Earthsea trilogy /or at least The tombs of Atuan/ before reading Tehanu, so maybe not the best chioce if you just want a fast romantic read!

But as I said - I'm undecided. Part because in Tehanu she makes the characters come alive in a kind of everyday, ... ... favourites, but some of my "would reread again when in need of comfortable familarity" would be:
A Wizard of Earthsea, The Tombs of Atuan and The Farthest Shore by Ursula K Le Guin (I've read the fourth and fifth book in the Earthsea series but they aren't as loved as these three)
