Louis Braille was a happy, fun-loving child. However, one day while his parents were not watching him, Louis accidentally injured one of his eyes with a shop tool. Louis' eye developes an infection that spreads to his other eye, and he looses his sight. Louis' parents do their best to continue his education, and even teach him the alphabet by hammering nails that make the shapes of letters into wood. When Louis is older, he is sent to the Institute for the Blind in Paris. While at the institute, Louis begins to come up with a new system of reading and writing for the blind, because he is troubled by the huge books and difficult system that was currently being used. Louis presented his new idea to the principal. The principal fights to have Louis' system made standard for the country, and for the school. It is very difficult to get approval to change the system, but Louis continues to teach his system when he becomes a teacher at the institute. Louis falls ill, and dies at the age of 43. Today, Louis' system is the standard form of reading and writing for the visually impaired. Louis Braille changed the world for those who were visually impaired, giving them the ability to read and write fluently. ( )

This was a really informative book for me because I never knew the story of Louis Braille. I think students will find it very interesting as well. I can use this book in combo with Helen Keller stories. ( )

This is a book on Louis Braille and how he changed reading for the blind with a system he developed. It also tells of how Louis Braille became blind and how he was still determined to educate himself and change the old reading system for the blind. ( )

This book tells of how Braille came about. Louis Braille was born on January 4, 1809, when he was born he was not blind. When he was 3 he was playing in his fathers show and cut his eye with a tool. His eye developed an infection which eventually spread to the other eye. This infection made Louis go blind, so he had to learn to do everything all over again. Louis went to a special school for the blind. There they used a special system for reading and writing. Louis wasn't satisfied with his so in turn he came uo with his own version called Braille. ( )
