1968 and The People's Republic of China features The Cultural Revolution, staring Mao Zedong and his worshipful mob of hate-infused teenagers wearing red armbands, as they terrorize, torture, and murder millions of Chinese citizens suspected of undesirable family backgrounds. On the edge of this blood and tear soaked devil's playground, nestles the exotic British Crown Colony (and tax haven) of Hong Kong, a destination favored by international entrepreneurs, wealthy expatriates, schemers, scoundrels, some big-shot criminals, and a handful of dreamers. When Luke and Martha arrive in the colony to begin a life free from government coercion, they're met by a family in desperate need. To help, they must collude with at least one minor god, who requires them to look at life in a new way, and put everything at risk. Is it possible for end-results to be so overwhelmingly desirable they justify any means used to achieve them?… (more)
