Great concept, cute illustrations, but somehow it just doesn't work for me. I guess I'm not quite whimsical enough to believe a pinecone can play with a penguin. Come to think of it, though, I didn't have too much trouble with the penguin playing with the pinecone, or making a scarf for it, or taking it back to the forest....

Well, I'm not sure of my exact reaction, but the bottom line is that I can imagine the appeal, and yet it's not quite magical for me. ( )

This is such an adorable book. One reason I enjoyed this book was because of the illustrations. The author gave the pinecone shivers, and I could see it shiver. The author made the pinecone sneeze, and I could see it sneeze. When the penguin was sad, we could tell.
Another reason I loved this book was because of the characters. The penguin had so much emotion. He was happy to find the pinecone, he was sad to bring him home, he was excited when the pinecone grew. I loved seeing the emotions in the penguin.
The main idea of this story is that you don't have to be near your friends to be friends with them. Also, sometimes you have to let your friends go in order for them to grow into the best people they can be. ( )
