Destination wedding hijinks and misadventures abound as Seth Weinstein, a laggard Twitter marketer, heads for Miami where he and debutante Tina Clark are planning to be married despite the disapproval of her wealthy parents. Seth and his Groom Posse stumble from one misadventure to another, leaving the groom to wonder if he’ll ever find himself standing at the altar beside his bride.

Filled with Dave Barry’s typical mayhem, plot twists, and humor, the story doesn’t offer much in the way of surprises, but this whacky conglomeration of oddball characters is well-drawn and all seem supremely suited to the chaos of the tale. ( )

I won this through First Reads, I was surprised and pleased to come across it. Usually I listen to Dave Barry on cd - if you are going to laugh out loud, it's easier to be in your car alone. And I did laugh out loud reading this one too. A very clever, very funny story, that moves right along and does not lapse into predictability. Hope he keeps them coming. A great read for the beach or while traveling, or as a palate cleanser in between heftier works. Definitely recommended. ( )

Fabulous slapstick fun. Listening to the audio version read by the author is an added treat, and laugh-out-loud funny. ( )

When I picked up the book I thought it was going to be one of Dave Barry's nonfiction books and was caught a little off guard by what was clearly fiction. That being said while it came across as kind of dumb at first it was actually very funny. Some of the end results relationship wise were predictable, but some plot twists were just so completely off the wall that it leveled out in the end. A fun, quick, over the top read. Good for when you need a little silly. ( )

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0399158685, Hardcover)

A dark comic masterpiece—the first solo adult novel in more than a decade from the Pulitzer Prize winner and New York Times–bestselling author.

Seth Weinstein knew Tina was way out of his league in pretty much any way you could imagine, which is why it continued to astonish him that he was on the plane now for their destination wedding in Florida. The Groom Posse had already sprung an airport prank on him, and he’d survived it, and if that was the worst of it, everything should be okay. Smooth sailing from now on.

Seth has absolutely no idea what he’s about to get into. In the next several hours, he and his friends will become embroiled with rioters, Russian gangsters, angry strippers, a pimp as big as the Death Star, a very desperate Haitian refugee on the run with her two children from some very bad men, and an eleven-foot albino Burmese python named Blossom. And there’re still two days to go before the wedding.

As it turns out, it’s not smooth sailing, it’s more like a trip on the Titanic. And the water below him is getting deeper every minute. By the end, amid gunfire, high-speed chases, and
mayhem of the most unimaginable sort, violent men will fall, heroes will rise, and many lives will change.

Seth’s, not least of all.
