This is a collection of short pieces, poems and skits written by a retired naval chaplain. The stories begin when he is a young boy in Ireland and follow him as the family moves to Pennsylvania and then as he becomes a priest and serves as a chaplain during Vietnam. Each piece is a gracious reflection on events and people that affected him greatly. I laughed out loud several times and teared up more than once. I'd love to have been able to spend an hour or so with this man and his family! ( )

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0972733019, Paperback)

Following his retirement from the U.S. Navy and the Philadelphia Diocese, Connell J. Maguire joined a writing workshop in Riviera Beach, Fla., where he began writing plays. At the encouragement of fellow members of the workshop, he also tried his hand at prose. "Follies of a Navy Chaplain" is a collection of vignettes, along with a handful of poems and a pair of one-act plays, reflecting the author's view of Ireland, America, the Navy, and the priesthood through a pair of smiling Irish eyes. "Follies of a Navy Chaplain" will make you laugh some, and cry a little.
