As a homeschooling parent, I can appreciate the tiered approach in this book as my boys all learn in different ways and at varying speeds. This book has some tools to address those variations. I've now put one through Algebra I and looking forward to two more rounds. ( )

I didn't think I would actually get to use this book in my homeschooling, as many of the books written for classroom use don't cross over well to a one on one situation. I was pleasantly surprised by Differentiating Instruction n Algebra 1. It is not a full curriculum, and isn't meant to be. Instead it offers students an opportunity to show what they've learned. The thing we liked best was that the kids got to choose some of their work, which helped them feel in control of their own education. They wanted to use this book, which is always a good thing. ( )

I asked a local math teacher for a review of this book, and am posting his review:
Differentiating Instruction in Algebra 1 takes a look at a few of the fundamental topics within Algebra. It should be noted, as the author states upfront, that this is not a full-fledged curriculum, but a good supplement to an Algebra 1 curriculum. The book has a predictable flow through each unit, being very organized and easy to follow. The options that students are given for showing their knowledge/proficiency are quite varied. I like how Lessons are set up with 3 kinds of problems: 1) Imperatives (everyone does all of them), 2) Negotiables (everyone chooses at least 2 problems from 3 or 4 to do), and 3) Options (any student may choose whether or not to do the problem(s)). I also liked a few of the end-of-lesson projects included in the lessons (especially for the more motivated students or those that learn better with hands-on lessons). Overall, I think Differentiating Instruction could be a quite useful resource, both to the beginning teacher and the veteran looking for some new ideas. Matt Wahlman ( )

Differentiating Instruction in Algebra 1 is a great tool for students and teachers. Teachers can use this book to give their students various methods of learning Algebra 1. It also helps keep students involved by changing the activities. I love this book and I cannot wait to use it when I become a math teacher! ( )

Differentiating Instruction in Algebra 1 by Kelli Jurek is a great instructional tool for students struggling in Algebra as well as a great tool for teachers to reach students who learn differently. It approaches math from many styles of teaching so as to help students learn the process regardless of how they best interpret information. I love this book and it has been a help even in my beginning algebra class in college! ( )
