Touch & Go

The Denbe family seem to have the perfect life - as enviable marriage, a beautiful home, a successful business. But appearances can be deceiving and when the Denbes are abducted, insurance investigator Tessa Leoni will have to separate the lies from the truth if she is to find them before it is too late…

While this is book #2 in the Tessa Leoni series (a spin-off of the D.D. Warren series), the focus for most of the book is on the dissection of the Denbe family’s lives both prior to, during and following their abduction. Readers are privy to their most intimate moments via the 1st person account of Libby Denbe interspersed with the 3rd person narratives of the investigators, primarily Tessa and Sheriff Wyatt Foster, as they attempt to follow the clues to the family’s whereabouts.

The mystery itself is intriguing as the Denbes’ secrets are revealed one by one, and the facade of the perfect family slowly disintegrates. The suspects from amongst the victims’ supposedly loving relatives and friends pile up and their motives range from jealousy, greed, revenge and hatred. Although the revelation of the mastermind’s identity is not all that surprising, it is, nevertheless, disappointing as it results in a darker and more bitter ending without much hope in sight.

Tessa Leoni’s character development is, unfortunately, minimal although the hints at a romance with the sexy sheriff are promising and it is good to see her and her daughter recovering from their ordeal in the first installment Love You More.

Finally, although the mix of 1st and 3rd person takes some time getting used to, Elizabeth Rodger’s narration is immersive and heightens the intensity of the circumstances.

All in all, a gripping thriller and I look forward to reading more about Tessa in the future. ( )

Libby Denbe appears to have the perfect life married to a wealthy construction firm owner and living in a highly desirable neighborhood in Boston. When she discovers her husband’s infidelities, she and her 16-year-old daughter must fight to hold together a life that is unraveling. Upon returning from a dinner date with her husband the remains of her life collapses. Four men, armed with tasers, abduct them and whisk them off to an isolated prison in New Hampshire. At once they must submit to the cruelty of their captors and try to understand the bizarre circumstances that have led to their capture.

Meanwhile, Tessa Leoni, hired by the company to examine the evidence, begins piecing together a touch and go investigation. All signs quickly point to an unknown suspect within Denbe Construction. With a late ransom demand thrown into the quagmire, time is running out for Tessa and the police force to find the Denbes. Told between alternating voices of Libby, Tessa and sheriff Wyatt Foster, the story proceeds as both a crime investigation and a survival story. Through the Denbe family episodes, the reader holds the answers to all the investigative questions, except one. Who is responsible? The reader is handed a twist ending that few seasoned suspense fans would predict.

Though the plot drives forward with many twists and turns toward resolution, Lisa Gardner has not written a masterpiece in literary terms. Character development is shallow leaving the reader sensing that the characters have been seen before. For suspense lovers who crave plot over language prowess, this book is a surefire winner. ( )

I would actually give this 3.5 stars. It was a good book not great but it was ok. It wasn't my favorite book of hers but it still had a lot of suspense, thrill, romantic interests and terror. Had no clue who the bad guy was until the end. ( )

Exciting, well-paced, fast read audiobook, despite it's 14+ hour length. It's about a kidnapping of a rich family and the resultant search and circumstances of the family. The characters are well described and believable. Gardner tells the story from the perspective of Judith, the woman victim. It makes her books. Our heroine, Tessa, serves as private investigator on the case with many competing LEO interests. Pretty good book, I'll read another. ( )

Exciting, well-paced, fast read, many characters with depth and likeable personalities, scary but not gory. ( )

Book description
Tessa Leoni arrives at the Boston brownstone of the Denbes to investigate the disappearance of Justin, Libby, and their fifteen-year-old daughter, Ashlyn, and uncovers secrets about the seemingly perfect family.
This no-holds-barred stand-alone from Thriller Award–winner Gardner opens with the brutally efficient kidnapping of the Denbe family—father Justin, wife Libby, and 15-year-old daughter Ashlyn—from their exclusive Back Bay townhouse. Law enforcement officials who get quickly involved include corporate investigator Tessa Leoni (from 2011’s Love You More) and series lead Boston Det. Sgt. D.D. Warren (Catch Me, etc.). When the trail leads out of state, New Hampshire county cop Wyatt Foster and FBI special agent Nicole Adams get on the case. Gardner effectively alternates between the physical and emotional disintegration of the family under the pressure of their captivity and the efforts of Leoni and company to dig into the secrets of Denbe Construction, its key employees, and its finances, as well as to locate the Denbes. The suspense builds as the action races to a spectacular conclusion and the unmasking of the plot’s mastermind.

#1 New York Times bestseller Lisa Gardner, author of Catch Me and Love You More, returns with a heart-thumping thriller about what lurks behind the facade of a perfect family.

This is my family:  Vanished without a trace…

Justin and Libby Denbe have the kind of life that looks good in the pages of a glossy magazine. A beautiful fifteen-year old daughter, Ashlyn. A gorgeous brownstone on a tree-lined street in Boston’s elite Back Bay neighborhood. A great marriage, admired by friends and family.  A perfect life.

This is what I know:  Pain has a flavor…

When investigator Tessa Leoni arrives at the crime scene in the Denbes’ home, she finds scuff marks on the floor and Taser confetti in the foyer.  The family appears to have been abducted, with only a pile of their most personal possessions remaining behind.  No witnesses, no ransom demands, no motive.  Just an entire family, vanished without a trace.

This is what I fear:  The worst is yet to come…

Tessa knows better than anyone that even the most perfect façades can hide the darkest secrets.  Now she must race against the clock to uncover the Denbes’ innermost dealings, a complex tangle of friendships and betrayal, big business and small sacrifices.  Who would want to kidnap such a perfect little family?  And how far would such a person be willing to go?

This is the truth:  Love, safety, family…it is all touch and go.
