Pauline Simms has a hard but predictable life in Spindle Cove where she works as a barmaid in the local tavern and dreams of one day earning enough to get her sister and herself out from under her father's roof. Griffin York, the Duke of Hanford is desperately trying to get his mother to stop setting him up with eligible women she wants him to wed. When the Duchess drags her son to Spindle Cove to choose a young woman to turn into a duchess, Griff chooses Pauline in the hopes that his mother will finally give up. What neither Griff nor Pauline imagine is that two such different people might be a perfect match.

This book won me over from the opening page where Griff accidentally feels up his own mother's ankle. Griff is a complex hero with a delightful, meddling mother. Pauline is a strong, bright young woman who never loses sight of reality as difficult as it sometimes is. Funny, sweet, and tied up with a thoroughly happy ending, I highly recommend this historical romance to anyone who enjoys the genre. ( )

Any Duchess Will Do
4.5 Stars

Lovely and original retelling of Cinderella with a smidgeon of Pygmalion thrown in for good measure.

Griff and Pauline have amazing chemistry and their romance sizzles on the pages. Griff is dark, broody and tortured - the epitome of my favorite hero type. His personal tale of tragedy pulls at the heartstrings and makes it impossible not to love him, which is interesting considering that he is the despicable Halford from A Week To Be Wicked and his character undergoes a complete transformation.

Pauline is an engaging heroine. She has admirable internal strength and her take no prisoners attitude with Griff and his mother is priceless. Speaking of Griff's mother, the Duchess and her dynamic with Pauline is one of the highlights of the story and anyone familiar with Julia Quinn's Lady Danbury will absolutely adore her character.

Although the story is delightful with numerous laugh-out-loud moments, it is rather far-fetched and requires the reader to suspend their disbelief 100% as there is absolutely NO way a duke would marry a serving girl in Regency England. Nevertheless, Any Duchess Will Do is an emotional and entertaining addition to the Spindle Cove series.

This is a solid story; one that I would normally rate 3 stars.
However, it is definitely a 4-1/2 when adding [Eva Kaminsky] the narrator into the mix. She absolutely enhances the telling of this tale. She seamlessly moves between different English accents (i.e., proper vs. cockney, etc.), paces the story very well, expresses appropriate emotion, and... wow! Too bad more authors/agents/companies (whomever makes the decision) don't realize how important the narrator is, to the popularity of a story. This audiobook should be listened to by anyone who thinks they are good at all the skills I named, as 95% would find out how it really should be done.
The story, like I said before, is a solid tale. The only, but fairly major issue I had, was with parts of story written as though it was occurring in the 20th or 21st century, not the 19th. The story's saving grace is the real emotions her H/H and the Duke's mother emit throughout. They are well written, if not a bit too "current."
Definitely worth checking out. ( )

Book description
Griffin York, the Duke of Halford, has no desire to wed this season—or any season—but his diabolical mother abducts him to “Spinster Cove” and insists he select a bride from the ladies in residence. Griff decides to teach her a lesson that will end the marriage debate forever. He chooses the serving girl.

Overworked and struggling, Pauline Simms doesn’t dream about dukes. All she wants is to hang up her barmaid apron and open a bookshop. That dream becomes a possibility when an arrogant, sinfully attractive duke offers her a small fortune for a week’s employment. Her duties are simple: submit to his mother’s “duchess training”… and fail miserably.

But in London, Pauline isn’t a miserable failure. She’s a brave, quick-witted, beguiling failure—a woman who ignites Griff’s desire and soothes the darkness in his soul. Keeping Pauline by his side won’t be easy. Even if Society could accept a serving girl duchess—can a roguish duke convince a serving girl to trust him with her heart?
