At first glance, this is a pretty simple story: older wealthy guy falls for younger sexy man and resists because, well, the age difference. And assumptions about what the younger guy is looking for. And while some of that is true, it is only the top layer of what is going on in this book. Both Locky, the older of the two, and Becket are far more complex characters than they seem to be and I loved discovering all the layers as they were slowly revealed by their interactions and several events that almost doom their relationship before it begins.

Becket comes from a family of farmers and has never had it easy. Not financially, and not psychologically. He is the youngest child, the only one who managed to make it to college, and he is determined to have some fun now that he can. Unfortunately, that gets him severely abused, and his resulting attempts to cover up his shame doesn’t help his image with Locky, the man he is desperately trying to impress. When Becket is called back home due to a family emergency the real drama begins as years of family history unravel and shake Becket deeply. On top of what he recently endured, it may just be too much for him to deal with.

Locky was born into a rich family, but his parents are cold, and his mother is a real b*tch. He was expected to following his father’s footsteps and become a lawyer, but when he sees a young gay men beaten to death, it changes his life. One rule he has is never to get involved with the students, but Becket tests his resistance to the limits. Locky suspects something traumatic happened to the younger man, so when he leaves to see his family, Locky follows – just as a friend. As he gets to know Becket better, suddenly Locky has to question his own assumptions and he ends up just as shaken as Locky.

If you like stories about men who have unknown depths, if discovering the truth behind some mysterious behavior seems interesting, and if you’re looking for a read about two very different men who are uniquely suited to help each other heal, then you will probably enjoy this novella.
