I was sitting on a beach, ironically on my own last day of a summer vacation, when I happened to see a link to a free download of Bon Rose’s “Old Jacob” for the kindle. With nothing to lose, I clicked a few buttons and in a minute or so I was reading a fun horror tale about Hailey, a girl on her last day of summer vacation, looking for one last adventure before returning to school. What unfolds is something a bit more terrifying than Hailey and her pal Jared bargain for. As they go exploring in an old mine, a place of local legend, they find that maybe some legends are made of flesh and bone, and maybe some of them have grave intentions.

This story was a blast to read. As the kids find themselves being stalked inside the mine by Old Jacob, shrinking from the sound of his axe upon the mine’s walls, I was transported to an earlier time in my life, a time when the horror that I took in was movies like The Monster Squad and The Goonies. This type of horror is much lighter, and it emphasizes the fun rather than the shocking, and as a change of pace to the type of stuff I usually read now, it was perfect. Sealing this story’s status as a fine addition to my kindle was the fact that the writing is tight and descriptive, the characters are strong, and the package is well-edited and delivered.

“Old Jacob” is the first story in a series of young adult horror tales featuring Hailey and Jared as they face off against grave dangers, measuring themselves against ever greater perils, and it will not be the last one that I will read myself. If you have a fond remembrance of the kinds of things that scared you as a kid, or if you have some young ones around you at the right age for such thrills and chills, Bon Rose is an author worth checking out.
