Excellent book set mainly in 19th Century Barbados and includes themes of emigration , slavery and community among the Scottish diaspora in exile.
The book uses a real historical event (1831Barbados hurricane) to change the direction and scope of the book. Excellent writing, thought provoking and entertaining. Reminded me at times of Conrad's Lord Jim and Almayer's Folly. No bad thing.
The closing section of the book quotes Caliban from Shakespeare's 'The Tempest'. The same quote was used in the opening and closing ceremonies of the London 2012 Olympics. A book of its time which captures Barbados two hundred years ago. Deserves a wide audience. ( )
