A touching story about two dogs who live together, but enjoy their time apart. But one day, after a squirrel enters in the picture and causes lots of trouble, they each think the other is missing. After searching all day and night, they are reunited.

Boot and Shoe were born in the same litter and now live in the same house together. They even sleep and eat together. All is well in their world until a squirrel comes into the picture and starts some trouble.

This is the story of two dogs named Boot and Shoe. Siblings from the same litter, they do most everything together. Except during the day, where Boot spends his time on the back porch, and Shoe on the front porch. One day, after chasing a troublesome squirrel around and around the house, they collapse in exhaustion. Upon awakening, they both try to find each other on their respective porches. There they wait for the other, spending a sleepless, worry-filled night. The next day they absolutely must pee, and at their favorite pee bush they are reunited.

Anyone who owns an animal will relate to this adorable story about two pets who find their lives turned upside down in a moment, and that sometimes it pays off to be predictable in the end.

It's pretty essential to my peace of mind that Marla Frazee commits herself to about 50 more years of a picture book career, because each of her books is such a joy to me.

I love how much space she has between the text and the illustrations, inviting the children in and giving them room to discover what Boot and Shoe don't know and feel so smart about it.

I like that the side of the house shows the circuit breaker box and the hose and spigot, details kids might see on the houses in their lives but rarely in books. Love the green and yellow details associated with each porch, though it was my 11yo who had to point out to me how to tell Boot from Shoe in the illustrations. ( )
