Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0954532414, Paperback)

This is a nostalgic account of the formative years of Maire McDonnell Garvey growing up in Ballaghaderreen, a small market town in Co. Roscommon, from 1927 to 1948. Maire gives a graphic account of history, politics, social life, characters and traditional music.

The Summerhills is a real place, untouched by housing or farming down through the centuries. A few standing stones have place of honor in one corner. A plantation of fir trees, stand against the cagaries of nature at the opposite end. It contains so many little hills and valleys. In Spring the mayflowers, bluebells and buttercups flourished. No one ever planted them. But Mother Nature, unseen, was always there all the time.

The area is surrounded by bogland. It was part of the home farm of the late Arthur Georges Costello, whose family were landlords of the Barony of Costello one hundred and fifty years ago. There is no road into it.
