PSC Review: It is challenging to find appropriate graphic novels for elementary students. If you don’t have the series Guinea Pig Pet Shop Private Eye in your library collection you should. Although not necessary to read this series in order, many students may find that reading the first book in the series before reading others will help them understand the quirky characters. Sasspants and sidekick Hamisher are still hoping to leave the pet store together, but when the human Detective Pickles takes only Sasspants, Hamisher is dejected. When the bookstore cat disappears, he tries to solve the mystery, but it’s only when Sasspants leaves Detective Pickles home and returns is the lost cat located. They are a team and must remain a team, even if it means the pet store will be their home forever. Fun read with sophisticated humor, a nice switch from in-your-face bathroom humor. ( )

In the fifth book in this popular comic series, guinea pig private eye Sasspants is bought at the pet store and separated from best friend Hamisher the hamster. so when a new mystery arises shortly after — involving the disappearance of the cat from the neighboring book store — the animals at Mr. Venezi’s Pets & Stuff rally together to do their guinea P.I. proud. Meanwhile, Sasspants engineers a way to escape and reunite with Hamisher to save the sleepy feline. As with other books in the series, the dialogue is humorous, full of word play. And the animals have some clean laughs at the expense of the humans. The boldly colorful illustrations are appealing to readers of all ages — and especially to anyone who loves guinea pigs. ( )
