This is the story of a very arrogant and egotistical former politician who becomes involved in the accidental death of a bicycle courier in Toronto. Michael Bryant's story is very well told. His life before the accident in September 2009 is one of an over achiever who goes to the right school, works as a clerk for the future chief of the Canadian Supreme Court, marries an equally ambitious lawyer, Susan Ambramovich and then goes on to become Ontarios's youngest Attorney General. Michael Bryan's tale is filled with names of well known friends and colleagues and it is an inside look into the politics of Ontario under Premier Dalton McGuinty. Bryant loved the challenge of the job and the media attention it generated. He thrived on the buzz. Bryant also talks about his alcoholism and the fact that he was able to quit drinking three years before the accident. The accident happens on the evening that he is celebrating his 12th anniversary with his wife, in a very low key fashion. The accident killed bicycle courier Darcy Allen Shepherd who was drunk and likely high at the time. Shepherd had a history of harassing motorists while under the influence and on this evening, Bryant became his target. Bryant ends up in jail and charged by the Toronto police. It takes 9 months to build the case enough to convince the Prosecution to drop the charges. The accident humbles Bryant and forces him to take a hard look at himself and some of his assumptions, especially as the former AG. He begins to understand the turmoil that marginalized folks such as Shepherd face and concludes that the justice system has to be changed significantly so that mental health issues are tackled more readily since they are often the reason why people commit crimes. I enjoyed this book and would recommend it. ( )
