First off, this is my very favorite P.D. Eastman book. (Yes, I get that Eastman was 'just' the illustrator, but the only books in the Dr. Seuss universe that I joyfully bonded with all have P.D. Eastman on the cover.)
So on to the story: Robert is a horse with an allergy. (I know what you're thinking...He applies for some kind of government grant, or sues the 'establishment' for not accommodating his needs. WRONG!)
Robert is a problem solver. When he discovers that he is incompatible with his family's business, he goes out into the world to make a living. And he is so determined, that he doesn't give up when his first or second job-hunting attempt does not work out. Robert keeps searching. (I wanted to scritchy that horse behind the ears and tell him he was 'Such a good boy!')
Thanks to his perseverance, Robert eventually finds his place in the world. IMO that is an excellent lesson to be sending to our kids. (
