I'm done with Neuromancer, which left me feeling lukewarm, and about to start on Clive Barker's Books of Blood Volumes 1-3. I've got my bookmark poised to slip into my first venture into Clive Barker Country with Books of Blood Volumes 1-3. ... rule, I'd recommend 'Salem's Lot which is also a classic and slightly more modern.
I'd also add in Ghost Story, The Books of Blood and (if I thought they could handle it) Off Season. Here are the books I picked from the Genre Reader's Advisory.
The Books of Blood by Barker, Clive
Lost Souls by Brite, Poppy Z
House of Leaves by Danielewski, Mark Z.
The Fury by Farris, John
Symphony by Grant, Charles
Those Who Hunt the Night by Hambly, Barbara
Obsession by H ... Sadly, after Books of Blood it was all downhill for Barker. I like Weaveworld and Sacrament isn't bad, but the others are all ten times longer than they needed to be. OK ... Books of Blood Anything to get the genre newbie hooked on "good horror" by Barker. ... are clearly Gothic but not horror. Similarly, I don't think there's much in the way of Gothic elements in Off Season or The Books of Blood. ... also fantastic, among the best in the series. And BUBBA HO-TEP was a great film based on his story.
I'm a big fan of The Books of Blood, too. I don't think I'll ever forget "The Yattering and Jack." "Pig Blood Blues," and "Son of Celluloid" are also among my favorites, the latter is also ... I second 20th Century Ghosts, Skeleton Crew and The Books of Blood.
I would also add Night Shift by Stephen King. It was one of the earlier books by King I read and while not all of the stories have a lasting impression there were some that I've read many times. Would Different Sea ... The Books of Blood, all six of 'em (Books of Blood 1, The Books of Blood 2, The Books of Blood 3, The Inhuman Condition, In the Flesh and Cabal). For my money, Clive Barker never got better than those stories.
Stephen King's Skeleton Crew. What an awesome batch of stories. ... ... Imajica or The Great and Secret Show. There are certainly horror elements in all of these works but aside from the The Books of Blood most of Barker's work is more fantasy than straight horror IMO. I also enjoyed his Books of Blood and I liked Imajica. Weaveworld was interesting.
"Splatterpunk" is fine, if you can genuinely support a story with it. It's hard to top The Thing for pure, unadulterated biological nightmares.
In this age of global terrorism, dirty bombs, and unsafe ... ... and his name is Clive Barker"--he presented horror readers with an entirely new voice and vision.
A number of tales in THE BOOKS OF BLOOD series are genuinely good and original (esp. "In the Hills, the Cities") and I also liked his first novel, THE DAMNATION GAME.
Some people blame him ... ... his misfires, I pick up his books as soon as they are released.
Clive Barker - I was a little iffy here. His six Books of Blood are some of the best horror fiction I've ever read. The problem is that starting with Weaveworld he sort of stepped out of horror and into dark fantasy, ... I loved "Manhattan Meat Train" and "Rawhead Rex." I loved his Books of Blood (3) Death Note, Volume 8 by Tsugumi Ohba
(4) Death Note, Volume 9 by Tsugumi Ohba
(5) Books of Blood 1-3 by Clive Barker
(6) Glass Houses by Rachel Caine
(7) Death Note, Volume 10 by Tsugumi Ohba ... 20 century ghosts by Joe Hill, Alone with the horrors by Ramsey Campbell, Bradbury Stories by Ray Bradbury, Books of Blood by Clive Barker and Skeleton Crew by Stephen King.
3. Vampires, Werewolves & Zombies: 13 bullets by David Wellington, Dracula by Bra ... ... they just didn't thrill me. That's also why I'm not a fan of The Stand or most of Clive Barker's novels (though his Books of Blood stories were brilliant).
As to the quote, could it be It? ... neglected it for a bit, I think it's time for me to get back to The Mysteries of Udolpho. Also, I want to finish up The Books of Blood, Vol. 1 and John Polidori's The Vampyre which I started in the last few days. And I've been listening to the audiobook of For Whom the Bell Tolls, ... Carlos,
I hope you enjoy The Books of Blood. I remember reading those some time in the early nineties. At the time, they were a revelation. I'd never read anything quite like them before. He's been imitated quite a bit since then, so they may not have the punch they once had, but I still ... Funny, I just started the first volume of his Books of Blood. I've only read the first story so far, but I thought it was pretty good. Cabal... It's been forever since I read that. Man, those Books of Blood short story collections (Cabal was what, book five or six?) are some of the best horror ever written. I need to reread all of them some day.
Sadly, I never liked his novels quite as much as I enjoyed his short stuff. The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
The Murder Book by Jonathan Kellerman
Books of Blood by Clive Barker
The Book of the Dead by Lincoln Child and Douglas Preston
This Book Will Save Your Life by Amy M Homes ... Island by J G Ballard are very disturbing books.
In the context of horrorthere's plenty to disturb in Clive Barker's Books of Blood
A Dream of Dracula-Leonard Wolf
An often very disturbing analysis of the core of the vampire mythology.
Not to say it isn't worth reading.;)
Day ... ... Isaac Asimov
…Bloodchild & other stories, Octavia E. Butler
…The Collection, Bentley Little
…Books Of Blood, Clive Barker
…100 Jolts: Shockingly Short Stories, Michael Arnzen
…Starwater Strains, Gene Wolfe
…Collected Stories, William Fau ... I'll second Clive Barker's Books of Blood.
If you are looking for a better quality of writing in your horror, I'd highly recommend Peter Straub. Especially Ghost Story, Floating Dragon, Mr. X or Koko (though Koko isn't a 'scary' story, just a terrific mystery/thriller).
I ... Yeah don't give up have you tried Ketchum and Braunbeck or maybe give Clive Barkers shorts Books of Blood a try. I loved Imajica, really liked The Great and Secret Show, really like the shorts in Books of Blood and was disappointed by Weaveworld (may give it another shot someday..) What other Barker novel would you recommend I read next? I already have, but have not read, Everville, The Thief of Alw ... Shadow,
Clive Barker pretty much lost me right after his six Books of Blood. Granted, his short work was darker and more imaginative than any horror I'd ever read before. (Don't agree about depth though. Even bad Stephen King has plenty of depth to it.)
Clive's novels though... I ... ... original 'monster' I'd read about in years were the walking cities from 'In the Hills, the Cities' from Clive Barker's Books of Blood.
Clive Barker is on here a number of times, isn't he? I sure miss the days when he was churning out pure horror.
