A book that leaves the reader constantly trying to figure out what is going on, Sky High by Patricia Reilly Giff tells the story of a boy who spends his time inventing things. One day at school he learns that there will be an inventing fair coming up. Testing his new invention gets Charlie in trouble and getting out of his messes lead to create one invention after another. In the end, Charlie has made new friends and has an unexpected success at the invention fair. The storyline is inviting, but, unfortunately the book is poorly written. There is no development of character. The writing is choppy and disconnected. There is a significant lack of transitions which leaves the reader confused and makes it difficult to follow the sequence of events. I’m surprised this book made it past an editor’s desk. ( )
