ammodramus88: Both of these stories feature young women with minds of their own living in a northern European environment filled with folkloric beings. The mood is different in each story (Ronia's story seems to be a happier one, while Travel Light is more of an elegy for things going away), but there is a basic similarity between them.… (more)

I loved this tale of adventure by Astrid Lindgren (author of the Pippi Longstocking series). Although dwarves, harpies, and other magical creatures inhabit the wood explored by the main character, Ronia, her real growth is shown in a new friendship she forms with a similarly adventurous boy. At turns heartbreaking and heartwarming, this story is surely a classic. I recommend it for ages 8 and up. ( )

Ronia will inherit her father's band of robbers someday, if only they can defend themselves from the king's soldiers and the competing band of robbers who have moved in next door. But Ronia doesn't want to be a robber, she doesn't want to fight soldiers, and her best friend is Birk, son of the rival robber chieftain. Magic, family, friendship and woodland adventures make this a tale that's hard to put down.

An enchanting story of two warring robber clan’s in a vaguely historical, vaguely Scandinavian setting. I really enjoyed it, especially the nuanced depiction of the various characters and the beautiful description of the natural setting. ( )

First words

Book description
Ronia lives with her father, a robber chieftain, and his band of men in their fortress on the top of a mountain. On the night Ronia was born, a bolt of lightning split the stronghold in two, leaving a huge chasm - Hell's Gap - in between. Soon Ronia is old enough to explore the forest around her, but she must beware of the grey dwarfs and wild harpies that live there. One day she meets Birk, the son of a rival robber leader who has claimed the other side of Hell's Gap, and upon whom Ronia's father instantly declares war. Ronia and Birk develop a friendship that is as indestructible as the mountain fortress itself. But with their families sworn enemies they are forced to keep their friendship a secret until one fateful day when Ronia's father catches Birk ...prompting Ronia and Birk to escape into the woods and fend for themselves. How long can Ronia and Birk survive in the magical forest? And will their fathers ever put aside their differences to get their beloved children back?
