Amos Oz
Amos Oz (1939 - 2018), roden je u Jerusalimu. Studirao je filozofiju i književnost na Hebrejskom univerzitetu. Jedan je od najboljih izraelskih živih pisaca, a uz to je i ugledni politicki komentator i pobornik mira na Bliskom istoku. Autor je mnogih književnih dela medu kojima su romani Crna kutija, Poznavati ženu, Fima, Ne odlazi nocas, Isto more, Moj Mihael i Juda, autobiografija Prica o ljubavi i tami, kao i dokumentarna prozna dela Na tlu Izraela, Padine Libana, Izrael, Palestina i mir i Pocetak price. Njegove knjige prevedene su na cetrdeset dva jezika. Dobitnik je mnogih medunarodnih književnih nagrada.

Spectacularly good historical autobiography of Amos Oz from birth in 1939, and family life in the formative years of the Palestine Mandate Territory through to the foundation of Israel.
Firstly as a personal record of those years I found the book invaluable. Secondly, this wonderful translation from Hebrew offers a moving story of Jewish life in a new continent. The story focuses on the struggle to adapt to the formation of a new country where the old mentalities of European Jews must be reinvigorated for Israel to prosper.
As a teenager this conflict sees Amos leave home (a few years after his mother's desperately sad suicide), change his name to Oz and join a kibbutz, much against the family traditional view of what his future should be. It is as a kibbutzim that Oz finds his gift as a writer and in an odd way reinforces the great tradition of literary scholarship that brought his forebears fame.
An important book to read.

It took several weeks to get through, which I regret -- sitting and reading it in one go, streaming through the different waves of meaning and stories and people, might've made this a 5-star. Yes, it might need some trimming, but it was a powerful lens into Oz's mind, the way his thought process worked, how he remembered his mother and the other people in his life, and the stories that they told him.

This moving autobiographical tale of Oz’s childhood is fascinating in that it gives a child’s view of the 1948 establishment of the state of Israel and what it was like to live as a Jew in British Mandated Palestine prior to that. Particularly memorable is his remarkable description of the night Israel became a nation and the poignant mixture of hope and terror.

Mentioned early in the novel, the suicide of his mother casts a solemn pathos across the entire work as Amos grows and begins to assert his own independence by working on a kibbutz. Along the way, he meets a number of people who would play key roles in the newly born nation.

In addition, there’s plenty of family and friends’ experiences of the Nazi occupation, both those who escaped it and those who tragically did not. I found this more moving having just read The Kindly Ones, too.
