I need to divide this story into three separate sections for the purpose of this review. Part 1 is quite intriguing with the discovery of two dead bodies (one male and the other female). There is no apparent reason for their deaths and while the rest of the house is searched and the death room returned to,a remarkable fact is discovered. The woman's body is a completely different one than was originally found. All very cleverly thought out and quite a suitably thrilling story-line.
Section 2 rather spoils the mood,as in it Le Queux trots out his stock 'love story'. This involves the 'mystery woman' of so many of his plots, with whom the hero falls hopelessly in love with. She has a secret which however she hints at but cannot under any circumstances tell him.
With section 3 the story once again gets on track with sealed rooms and deadly poison. The solution, although easy to solve,is still quite acceptable. So,a good solid tale, spoilt somewhat by a sloppy and soppy romance. ( )
