The plot itself barely held interest. ( )A very accurate novel about English Prime Ministerial elections. The life journey of 4 candidates vying to become the Prime Minister. The election travails, accusations, hidden truths and the final run-up makes it a quality read. 2697 First Among Equals, by Jeffrey Archer (read 15 Jan 1995) After reading one of Archer's books I decided to give him another chance. He has a knack, but obviously he is not an able author--he is a storyteller. This novel tells the story of three men supposedly elected to Parliament in 1964. The book is pleasant in that only the three are fakes--otherwise the factual setting from 1964 to 1984 is accurate. After 1984 of course all is imagination. Simon Kerslake is the good guy, Raymond Gould is the guy who is bad for awhile and then turns to the good again, and Charles Hampton is obnoxious. The writing is on a par with Peyton Place, I thought, and is lousily written. Archer is very easy to read, and I was moved by accounts in the book, but really it is not worthwhile reading. A novel of political shenanigans in England. Archer is himself very familiar with dodgy politicians, as he is one. This takes as a basic starting point four politicians entering parliament at the same time and level and follows them from there. Much scheming, conniving and all that sort of thing as they try to get to be that Downing Street resident guy. I can't get enough of this crap. A page turner, details the rise and rise of 4 contemporary politicians, until one is finally crowned Prime Minister. Gripping, utter rubbish. no reviews | add a review
