With this historical fiction book students can learn both about the rancho period of Mexican California and also about the state's mission era. The narrative is told in three parts. The first voice is a third person description of the Delgado family who are living on a rancho near Monterey in 1838. (This writing is annoyingly short and choppy.) The second viewpoint consists of reminiscences of a Delgado cousin. He used to be priest at the Carmel Mission and is visiting from Mexico. He regales his family with stories of Native uprisings and pirates from when Spain ruled California, but is sad that most of his work at the mission seems to have been a failure. Finally, the story is told through the journals, diaries, and letters of the Delgado family, including those of teenagers Rosalinda and Simon. These are the most interesting writings and through them, students will be able to learn a lot about rancho customs. The paintings on pages 10 and 11 do not match the writing. The author is describing a rancho harvest festival, but the drawings show Anglo farmers from a later era. ( )
