Work detailsBattle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era by James M. McPherson (Author) (1988)
read bc Ta-Nehisi Coates called it the best single-volume history of the Civil War. Absolutely gripping. Read it in Spring Break week on a couch in Montauk. ( )There's a reason this is one of the standard texts; it is comprehensive and thorough, though of course far from exhaustive. Besides Shelby Foote's three book masterpiece this is the leading cumulative account of the Civil War. From the years leading up to the war through the reunification process, McPherson captures all the emotions of the times. Though an historical account the book is written so seamlessly that you'll fly through it like your favorite novels! Truly worthy of all the praise it has received including the Pulitzer Prize! Even better than advertised. This was an absolutely fascinating look at the era of the American Civil War. McPherson not only examined the battles, the generals, the politics (on both sides) as well as Mexico, Canada, and England, but also looked at all the things that lead up to the war, and both sides of every issue before and during the war, economics (south and north), how the politics changed (south and north), military (army and navy) (south and north), states rights and how the states worked together (or didn't), women's rights and roles, military prisons and how they were affected by politics and economics, simply every big (and many smaller) issues were covered in beautiful, rich, easy to read language. He doesn't allow himself to be pulled into areas he isn't trying to cover, but which might have been considered sexier by the publishers (e.g., Lincoln's life during the war). Cudos to Mr. McPherson who must have spent many, many years preparing for and writing this book. The Pulitzer was well earned. High recommended. no reviews | add a review
