Na een kleine dertig jaren herlees ik het boek. Ik ben veranderd, de wereld is veranderd. Het boek boeit mij minder, ik kan me nu niet meer inleven in de hoofdpersoon Mendel; heden ten dagen vind ik hem eerder een jongmens die zich wentelt in het leed van de tweede wereldoorlog, bijna een zeur ware het onderwerp niet zo serieus, had ik het 30 jaren eerder niet leerzaam en ontroerend mooi gevonden. Iedere tijd vraagt een ander geluid, om zo te zeggen. ( )
