The Prisoner of Zenda by Anthony Hope (Jannes)
Jannes: Political scheming, kings, castles, duels, chases... everything you could hope for in a victorian romance

The First Journey of Agatha Heterodyne: Book One: Agatha Heterodyne and the Beetleburg Clank by Phil Foglio (Jannes)
Jannes: Girl Genius is more outlandish and cartoonish than Falkenstein, but the focus on continental Europe and german culture rather than Britain and the anglo-saxon outlook more common in other steampunk works makes it great inspirational material. Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke (Jannes)
Jannes: A bit earlier time-wise than Falkenstein, But a great source for inspiration on how 19th century society might operate when magic and faeries are a fact of life. Also a great take on magicians and magic in war sans fireballs and magic missiles.

An unusual, very well written game system and world. Set in a universe where magic, Fae, and dragons co-exist with 19th Century technology, Castle Falkenstein uses cards (no gentleman would dare touch dice!) for conflict resolution. Unfortunately not well supported, but a very good game. ( )
