Livro que li com muita expectativa.

É uma história que possui um paralelo com a minha vida relacionada com os computadores, pois fui tocado pela influência mágica do conceptor da Apple (que em conjunto com o homem da Microsoft - Bill Gates, mais influenciaram a era dos microcomputadors). Mesmo, o relacionamento entre Steve e Bill (deixem-me tomar esta liberdade...) é um aspecto interessante do livro.

Trata-se um livro com muito texto para ler, mas é, quase sempre, de boa leitura. Variando, entre um desenvolvimento do perfil pessoal do Steve Jobs e o seu percurso empresarial, foca essencialmente os períodos da Apple em maior detalhe (a Pixar e a Next, tem coberturas menores, assim como o período antes da Apple).

Um aspecto muito interessante é resultado da exaustiva descrição dos relacionamentos e dinâmicas dos projectos e com o próprio conselho de administração e responsáveis da Apple, bem como a formação dos negócios e como todo esse processo resultou de trabalho árduo de anos e de sucessivos falhanços, grandes (Avultados!) investimentos e do assumir de um risco extremo - deste ponto de vista, um verdadeiro tratado empresarial e uma leitura quase obrigatória para quem tem ambição de criar negócio em matéria do digital.

Também interessante é a descrição das opções e conceitos associados com a concepção e design de produtos - todos temos a aprender com este testemunho relatado das posições do Steve.

Por último, as últimas páginas são um texto do Steve Jobs que será memória colectiva futura da indústria das tecnologias e sistemas de informação - neste texto (no audiolivro, dito pelo próprio) existem diversas máximas e algumas tiradas que resumem o talento deste homem:
- que o cliente nem sempre tem razão
- que a elegância dos produtos resulta da incorporação do design e que este é a saturação do conhecimento
- que os modelos de negócio com sucesso são resultado da compreensão do mercado e lançamento de novos mercados devem preservar a satisfação dos desejos dos seus mais poderosos actores actuais
- a importância da capacidade de reter capacidade industrial
e, dois recados, bem mais explícitos e também úteis no nosso contexto:
- a indústria deve ser acarinhada e bem cuidada e isso passa por garantir formas de regulação e de licenciamento industrial que tenham em consideração o mundo, a globalização e a sustentabilidade económica e social (penso que a querer dar o recado de que o ambiente não será tudo)
- por último, que o empreendedorismo é importante e cria novas oportunidades, mas que os empresarios promovem a verdadeira conquista, pois completam, concretizam e mantêm, o iniciado pelos primeiros

Uma boa leitura, portanto. ( )

Interesting story of a super-ego;a spoiled rotten brat of a man who was indulged by everyone around him throughout his whole life. Master manipulator, total control freak, and yet he could encourage others in a way that brought out the best in people. He yelled and screamed and often cried when angry no matter who he was with. Took credit for all the products developed by Apple and Pixar. He had strange convictions about eating and health, which unfortunately lead to his early death from cancer. He refused to allow his body 'opened' and would not have surgery when cancer was found. A bad decision and one he admitted to. Jobs asked Isaacson to write his story, so this is an authorized biography. ( )

This was a great biography that highlighted both the upside and downside of Steve Jobs. Jobs was a middle class boy from California and a college drop out who went on the found Apple, one of the most successful companies ever. He was not an easy person and demanded perfection from his employees. He was mostly all about work and creating products that people didn't realize that they wanted - the iPod, iPhone, iPad to name the biggies. ( )

Jobs was far from perfect but a truly inspirational leader in his field. Isaacson has done a masterful job of telling his story; warts, triumphs and failures all included. ( )

Steve Jobs dreamed of a legacy that awed people. He wanted to be in the pantheon of great product innovators, indeed surpassing Edwin Land and even his early icons William Hewitt and David Packard. But, Jobs created more than great products. Just as significant was his ability to create great companies with valuable brands. And, he created two of the best of his era: Apple and Pixar.
 
Isaacson’s book is long, dull, often flat-footed, and humorless. It hammers on one nail, incessantly: that Steve Jobs was an awful man, but awful in the service of products people really liked (and eventually bought lots of) and so in the end his awfulness was probably OK. It is not Isaacson’s fault that Jobs from early on had a “admixture of sensitivity and insensitivity, bristliness and detachment,” as Isaacson describes it, or that Jobs abandoned friends, thought almost everyone else was a shithead, showed little interest in his daughters, and made life generally miserable for anyone who had to provide a good or service to him. But it is Isaacson’s fault that the biography is so narrowly focused on one moral theme. The reader is left to judge, with plenty of evidence both ways—and a clear idea of where Isaacson’s sympathies lie—whether Jobs deserves the Artist’s Exemption.

As Walter Isaacson says in this incisive biography, Jobs behaved like a Nietzschean superman, using his will – transmitted through an unblinking stare – as a remote-control device that compelled others to do his bidding.

While Jobs was a vigorous competitor, he also came to view himself as an elder statesman with a responsibility for giving advice to Google’s Page, Facebook Inc. CEO Mark Zuckerberg and other emerging technology executives, according to “Steve Jobs,” an authorized biography by Walter Isaacson and published by CBS Corp. (CBS)’s Simon & Schuster. It goes on sale Oct. 24.

Mr. Isaacson treats “Steve Jobs” as the biography of record, which means that it is a strange book to read so soon after its subject’s death. Some of it is an essential Silicon Valley chronicle, compiling stories well known to tech aficionados but interesting to a broad audience. Some of it is already quaint. Mr. Jobs’s first job was at Atari, and it involved the game Pong. (“If you’re under 30, ask your parents,” Mr. Isaacson writes.) Some, like an account of the release of the iPad 2, is so recent that it is hard to appreciate yet, even if Mr. Isaacson says the device comes to life “like the face of a tickled baby.”
