Southampton, 1910. When the Oceanic sets sail its ultimate destination is New York. But it must make one very important stop first: at Cherbourg, to pick up internationally renowned financier and art collector J. P. Morgan, fresh from a continental buying spree. George Dillman and Genevieve Masefield, the ship's detectives, are nervous about the presence of such an important passenger, not to mention his valuable cargo. After all, it is rare for a transatlantic voyage to pass without incident for the two sleuths. The everyday difficulties of managing passengers including a charming rake intent on causing mischief and a controversial painter travelling with his bohemian wife and his alluring French model, are brought to a pitch when a major art theft takes place and a throat is cut. Dillman and Masefield must draw upon all their experience to find the killer before it is too late.Previously published under the name Conrad Allen, the Ocean Liner series is making waves with a new generation of readers.… (more)

Reading these out of order, since some of the later ones were on sale. Not nearly as interesting as the first in the series; repetitive and not particularly engaging. ( )

3.5 stars...This was the 2nd book I've read of this series. I liked it but it was basically almost the same as the 1st book that I read -"Murder on the Maramora." I like mysteries set on ships and sea etc.but bc the books are so similar I probably won't read them all at the same time like I normally do. They are a nice light read every once in a while though. This is the first excursion that George Porter Dillman and Genevieve Masefield, shipboard detectives, will be taking on board the White Star Line. The Oceanic is sailing from Southampton, with stops in Cherbourg, France, and Queenstown (now Cobh), Ireland, before proceeding to New York. This voyage will be particularly important to have a detective on board because noted American financier JP Morgan will be embarking at Cherbourg after a successful shopping spree in Paris. His collection of art, books and other antiques will be tempting for any thief. Then there's the usual sort of petty crime on board ship, and because George and Genevieve seem to attract trouble, there's also a murder...

This was another undemanding mystery, easily completed in a morning. However, the scene where Genevieve decides to risk searching Jonathan Killick's cabin alone, without a lookout, felt out of character for her (it was imprudent, to say the least), and of COURSE he was going to find her in the cabin. And that's not the place she wanted to be after he had been basically stalking her for most of the trip. He very nearly succeeded in raping her, but for the timely arrival of the purser. That scene was highly upsetting and struck a discordant note with the rest of the book, and is the reason I've rated this 3.5 instead of the 4 it would otherwise have received. ( )

A pleasant light read, nothing exceptional or special, but well written. ( )
