This book is part one of a series, as a result, it focuses primarily upon character development rather than fast-paced action. For those who read zombie novels on a regular basis, that's pretty much the exact opposite of what usually occurs.

Some people may find that boring, but I found it gave a greater depth to the characters than you would have had otherwise. You cared more about who they were and what they wanted than you would have if they'd been running around shooting zombies every two minutes. For those are mainly action fans, book 2 looks to start off with zombie fights.

The novel also let you look at group dynamics in a survival situation. Again, as opposed to the usual end of the world novel where everyone is happy, there's one leader, the group functions as if they were raised together, Abandon has the group teetering on disintegration several times. It's kind of refreshing to read something where not everyone is supportive of each other - it's more real life rather than idealized life.

I'm interested in seeing if the author can handle full-on zombie war with the same touch as she used in this novel. ( )
