This book is a treasure, a simple but thought-provoking exposition of Jewish spirituality, using the basic concepts of Kabbalah. Rabbi Steinsaltz is a master at explaining difficult, esoteric concepts, and by doing so has provided what I believe is a classic 20th century work of spirituality. He begins with chapters on Jewish cosmology and the manifestations of the Divine in creation (in which I see some strong parallels with Gnosis), explaining the various spheres or realms of being (the world of "action" in which we live, and the higher worlds of formation, creation, and emanation) and the role of the angels in these realms. Next, Steinsaltz discusses man and his role (and responsibilities) in creation. Basic concepts in Judaism, such as the prohibition on images, the central role of the Torah, and the importance of rituals and dietary restrictions. He also beautifully explains the role of repentance in salvation, and the need to strive ever towards union with the divine. The Thirteen Petalled Rose is simply one of the best meditative books I have experienced - a gift from a master. 11/00 no reviews | add a review
