I suppose it was a good book in its time but now it's a bit of a naïve story. Easy read but noting special. ( )

Good story but a little bit dated now (1913). Customs, habits and social interaction depicted in a pretty ironic way, not avoiding great taboos of that period. Nice. ( )

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0140184279, Paperback)

A tragi-comedy of manners acted out almost entirely within the walls of a small pension or boarding house in late 19th century Paris, which is run by an appalling Dutch couple. The novel consists of a series of cameo scenes that are both funny and cruel.
