Fantasy. Fiction. Literature. Humor (Fiction.) HTML:“A totally captivating, hilarious, and clever look on the magical kingdom of Manhattan, where kissing frogs has never been this fun.”—Melissa de la Cruz, author of The Au Pairs

Katie Chandler had always heard that New York is a weird and wonderful place, but this small-town Texas gal had no idea how weird until she moved there. Everywhere she goes, she sees something worth gawking at and Katie is afraid she’s a little too normal to make a splash in the big city. Working for an ogre of a boss doesn’t help.

Then, seemingly out of the blue, Katie gets a job offer from Magic, Spells, and Illusions, Inc., a company that tricks of the trade to the magic community. For MSI, Katie’s ordinariness is an asset. Lacking any bit of magic, she can easily spot a fake spell, catch hidden clauses in competitor’s contracts, and detect magically disguised intruders. Suddenly, average Katie is very special indeed.

She quickly learns that office politics are even more complicated when your new boss is a real ogre, and you have a crush on the sexy, shy, ultra powerful head of the R&D department, who is so busy fighting an evil competitor threatening to sell black magic on the street that he seems barely to notice Katie. Now it’s up to Katie to pull off the impossible: save the world and–hopefully–live happily ever after.

I really WANTED to like this, but the heroine just declared, as a self-pep talk, "I didn't have magical powers, an MBA, or a boyfriend, but I did have..." I'm not sure in what world those equate or why a BF is something you work to earn (like an MBA).

The world building is nice; the plot and the way things wonderfully fall into the lap of the ordinary but somehow very special heroine is not.

It's also curiously asexual for a romance (3 girls, one bedroom, 2 boyfriends, and no mention of how any of them get ANY privacy). It feels like one of the hero's main draws is he... blushes? ( )

This book was a super fun listen. This world was like sex in the city meets the mortal instruments with a fun twist. I really loved the main character and loved the world building that was developed. It also reminded a bit of super hero show. It was a really fun read but just such a enjoyable read. I really loved listening to it. I also really loved the main characters and will def be checking out more books in this series soon! ( )

Not Bad. Predictable in most areas and the "revelations" weren't all that "revelatory" but a quick fun read. ( )

It was light, fun, and an easy read. I read it while staying a day with my daughter. She has read the series and recommended it.
