I wasn't engaged by the characters or the style. Couldn't be bothered to finish ( )

Though I mostly read fantasy and some science fiction, I enjoy a good mystery now and then. I enjoyed this one, mostly for the wryly cynical first-person narration by the main character, Richard Sherlock. The plots of mysteries often annoy me because the authors have to go through some contortions to try to keep you guessing to the end. Here, the plot was not really a problem for me, but there was one annoying manipulation: The main character was being very up-front with us readers as long as he was being mystified by the clues, and suddenly turned tight-lipped as soon as he began to figure it out. I know Stevens did that to preserve the "reveal" for the final dramatic scene, and I semi-forgive him because I enjoyed the story so much along the way, but I can't help wishing he'd found a better way, somehow. I give four stars in spite of that because it's a mystery, after all, and the genre has its irksome features. ( )

The Case of the Not-So-Fair Trader is the first book in the Richard Sherlock Whodunit series. What makes it different from The Case of Tiffany’s Epiphany (see my review below) is that the humor is slightly meaner at times and generally less politically correct.

The Case of the Not-So-Fair Trader is very well written, and descriptive. Here, we are introduced to the main characters, including Sherlock and Tiffany. ... Book Review: The Case of the Not-So-Fair Trader By Jim Stevens | Katarina Nolte

A great book full of laughs. The book is about Jack and his two best friends as they try to get Jack to realize that he is merrying the wrong girl. You have everything from a porn producer, a plastic surgeon, a rich daddy's girl, and a drunken Pastor getting a lap dance. Through it all you keep wondering if Jake will really get married. I would recommend this book to my friends. ( )

A fun quick read that sucked me in close to the beginning. I thought the author did a good job at making each character likeable in at least one way, yes even Alyssa! While some elements of the characters and plot could be considered unrealistic and fantastical, I don't always want to read about people like those I know and their everyday mundane lives. I hope to read more of Jim's writings in the future. ( )
