I was enthralled by this book when I read it years ago. The strangeness of life in another country in another era. I assumed it was all true-to-life. ( )

This was a beautifully written epic story about life, death, love and self-discovery as Jaki Gefjon struggles to unite the teachings of both the jungle and the sea. I especially liked Jaki's interactions with his mentors Jabalwan and later Captain Pym. ( )

Book description
From back cover: 1609. A time when navigation was more art than science, when the whole wide world was thought of as plunder. This is the time when Jaki Gefjon was born in the dark jungle of Borneo. A fair-skinned half-breed, Jaki is outcast as a devil child. Until he emerges from the jungle and enters upon an epic adventure; through times of violence, treachery, mysticism, love, and loss.
