... odd, it completely brought me back to the "real" Grimm tales I read as a child. Low point goes to Brian K. Vaughan for Pride of Baghdad, mainly for ruining a potentially fantastic material.

There are exceptions, of course: Pride of Baghdad is one, and even Maus, while perhaps not in consideration here, isn't off-target, given the very reader-friendly mice who tell the story.

For example, Maus is a graphic novel, or OGN. Brian K. Vaughan's Pride of Baghdad is also an OGN. As is Alan Moore's The Killing Joke. On the other hand, his Watchmen is not truly a graphic novel (although it is, of course, original - ... Pride of Baghdad tells the story of the lions of the Iraq Zoo in the weeks after the invasion; it's sad and has some violence, so it might be a bit ahead of sixth graders, but it's recommended for YA, and it's about the direct aftermath of war.

I did read and finish Pride of Bagdad, though! I would recommend Pride of Baghdad by Brian K. Vaughan. It is current, relevant, and very well written. I am not that into graphic novels, but my kids are. We found Pride of Baghdad to be powerful and the artwork is beautiful. We also have V for Vendetta and both volumes of Maus. I thought all of these were very well-done.

I'm also reading Pride of Baghdad this week to catch up before my book club meeting on Feb 8th! It's a graphic novel, but supposed to be pretty heavy. I'm looking forward to it quite a bit. I'm reading Pride of Baghdad for my book club next month. It should arrive in the mail next week.
I really like a lot of Brian K. Vaughan's other work (Runaways, Y the Last Man), but I haven't heard much about Pride of Baghdad. Has anyone read it? Should I keep a box of tissues handy? ... I'm a fan of noir movies and for me Frank Miller has captured that bleak, sparse style very well with these books.
Pride of Baghdad - another graphic novel that I really enjoyed, this one by Mr Brian K. "Y the Last Man" Vaughan - all about a small pride of lions that escapes from the ... Now that I've read it: Pride of Baghdad is excellent, if you don't mind talking animals as protagonists. (The animals talk to each other, not to humans.) The art and lettering are terrific.
It's a 'short story', where Y and Ex Machina are more novelistic, but it's more fully achieved, even ... Yes, I'm looking forward to Pride of Baghdad as well, but I have to say that although I've been following both Y: The Last Man and Ex Machina since early on, they've gotten a little rote lately, particularly Y. I mean, what's actually happened in the last year or two? Mostly detours ...
