Zany, imaginative, and entertaining. I laughed aloud a couple times! ( )

Terribly silly. Doesn't quite live up to the standards I'm used to by Neil Gaiman. But maybe I'm just not good with children's books. ( )

I was a little put off by the depiction of the volcano-worshiping people (for one thing, do indigenous peoples of long ago belong in the same category as aliens, pirates, talking dinosaurs, and vampires? For another, were the illustrations racist?).

Still, you have to be real curmudgeon not to find this amusing. I also really love it when time travel is portrayed correctly (i.e. the "everything always already happened" theory of time travel).

I wonder if Mr. Gaiman has read Michael Foreman's picture book [b:Fortunately Unfortunately|9545995|Fortunately, Unfortunately|Michael Foreman|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1320414980l/9545995._SX50_.jpg|14432415], which also features pirates, dinosaurs, volcanoes and aliens, as well as frequent use of the word "fortunately." For my late father, David, who would have told the tale with delight, and for my son, Michael, who would never have believed a word of it.

With love.
