I really enjoyed reading Jonathan Strange And Mr Norrell - it reminded me of all the books I loved as a child where magic was just part of the normal world (like Joan Aiken), and for a little while after I finished it I had cravings for ... #35 I've nearly finished The Ladies of Grace Adieu and although it has been quite enjoyable it is nowhere near as good as Strange & Norrell. ... the strength of his being the weekly"gardening correspondent" for the Financial Times since 1970.

Anyway, I finished Blue Like Jazz, liked it a lot, glad I listened to folks who told me I had to read it. Also finished The Ladies of Grace Adieu, loved it, it is a real comfort read. Tonight I begin Thursday the Rabbi Walked Out by Harry Kemelman and The Exile by Pearl S. Buck. MrsLee, I liked The Ladies of Grace Adieu! Finished two of mine, so started Twelfth Night and The Ladies of Grace Adieu by Susanna Clarke. Sorry about the delay. This was finals week.

There's a lovely story in Susanna Clarke's The Ladies of Grace Adieu which is set in Wall - nothing to do with the Stardust characters, but it's a nice little hommage and very funny. ... nudge, but I have to say Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell was wonderful. I did, however, giggle more at Clarke's The Ladies of Grace Adieu in which the nosy parker magician runs up against "the ladies" (in one of the short stories at least). I got Icehenge, 2010, The view from Serendip, Gardens of the Moon, The Ladies of Grace Adieu, and Sepulchre. The last two were in mint condition, like they'd never been read, and the Kate Mosse book was a hardback all for £2 from the charity shop. ... out through to the end, it's worth it. If you do read it and enjoy it, you may also want to consider Susanna Clarke's The Ladies of Grace Adieu as well. ... fantasy story was like heaven :-). It was funny and wry and poetic and splendidly long, long enough to get lost in.
And The Ladies of Grace Adieu is just fun... like expanded footnotes from Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell.
Perhaps we just look for different things in a fantasy book. I ... Oh, dear ~ I like Clarke and Lackey, though I admit they are somewhat uneven writers. While I loved Jonathan Strange, The Ladies of Grace Adieu left me cold. As for Mercedes, I couldn't even get through the last One Hundred Kingdoms novel, The Snow Queen.

As for what I'm reading: I've started The History of Love and am reading The Ladies of Grace Adieu and Adam and Eve and Pinch Me by Rendell in between and all around. lol I just bought and started The Ladies of Grace Adieu, the latest by Susanna Clarke. I'm only into the first story, but I'd say Clarke excels within the limits of the short story! But maybe that's because I pooped out 2/3 of the way through Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell three times? ... my younger son to a bookstore, with no intention to buy anything but....when I saw the last book by Susanna Clarke, The Ladies of Grace Adieu and other stories, I simply could not resist.
