I was hovering between 4 and 5 stars.
One of the few male-POV YA book I've come across and liked.

I like it. It's not an easy read, but that's why I do.
It's not perfect. There's no certainty. Just a long twisty road ahead.

Messy relationships. Messy situations.
Us, kids, f-ed up by our parents - more often than not.
It's life, and that's okay. 'Cause no one knows the rules and everyone plays by the ear.

It's messy. It's complicated. It's ugly. It's beautiful. It's life. ( )

DNF: I thought it was boring with very little character development. I really did not get a sense of who Evan was. His father's reaction was also out of character. He went from being distant and never around to taking him away for several months to a small cabin on a lake in Minnesota, where it didn't seem he worked at all. I'm really confused about what everyone liked so much. ( )

In sex and violence the author talks about a 17 year old addicted to sexual pleasure. Ethan carter loves to fool around with just about anyone. But he likes it when girls are willing to sleep with him. He's into an easy hunt. He even has sex on school grounds a sometimes. But unexpectedly his life takes a turn when he sleeps with the wrong girl. After a near death accident he is moved across the state to what use to be an abandoned lake house. Moving to this lakehouse he meets unusual characters his age and older. See how everyone ties into his life during his road to recovery. And what trials and tribulations this side of the state has to offer him. ( )

Great characterizations. Realistic, unflinching, intelligent, and funny. ( )

Seventeen-year-old Evan has been dragged all over the country by his father’s jobs. He uses his New Kid status to scout out girls who’ll Say Yes with the least amount of trouble, knowing he’ll soon be gone and won’t have to form any attachments. While at a boarding school in North Carolina Evan meets Collette, a beautiful girl on the track team. They begin a secret relationship that is ruined when Tate and Patrick, two jealous classmates, viciously assault him. Read the rest of the review on my blog (are you following me yet? Epigraph
They fuck you up, your mum and dad

They may not mean to, but they do.

They fill you with the faults they had

And add some extra, just for you.

--Philip Larkin
The Lake

This girl I hardly knew, taller than I was

and skinny, who made us boys

puff ourselves up and show off how far

we could throw rocks, or how many times

we could skip stones across the choppy water;

this awkward kid I'd never really spoken to

asked me one afternoon to swim across the lake with her.

We were sitting on the dock. It was chilly, but I said

I would do it, though the other side was hazy--almost

out of sight--and it would take us until dark

to make it there and back. So we dove in and started off

slowly. As we swam, mostly breast stroke, she talked

about the lake, how old it was, what sorts of creatures

lived there now, how it had changed

over its lifetime, the depth of its ice

in winter, how the fish huddled down on the bottom

between the ice and mud. And then she asked me

what I knew, and I had to say, Nothing in particular.

And then, despite myself, I made up a story

about the stars: I heard myself singing a song

I made up as I sang, about the constellations

and soon she was singing with me. We reached

the middle of the lake, out of breath but singing,

and realized the other side was too far. We treaded

water there, then turned and headed back, quiet now.

We were tired. We climbed out and walked our separate ways

home through the dusk light to our families

in silence. No goodbyes. And we never spoke again.

You'd think the most fucked-up part of the last year would be the moment when I read this and thought, "Yeah, that. That sounds like the way to go."
