'There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Snow!' by Lucille Colandro is a great rhyming story about a lady and the winter season. Taken from the popular and similar story "There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly', in this story the lady swallows winter items and the pictures are all very colorful. The cold lady swallows some snow, a pipe, some coal, a hat, a stick, and a scarf. This story is good to read before Christmas or to teach rhyming words and poetry. Alot like "There was an old lady who swallowed a fly", this book is very cute and uses much rhyming. It also uses repitition and facilitates remembering tricks. It is very cute and teaches the lesson that you can't eat everything you see, also. At the end, she hiccuped out all she'd eaten and out popped a snowman, so now the children know all of the things needed to make a cute snowman. A winter twist to the traditional I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly, Colandro & Lee's version ends with the cold lady hiccoughing up the unusual contents of her stomach (snow, pipe, coal, top hat, stick, and scarf) to make a snowman. The relationship among the items isn't as logical as the traditional version, but when children catch on that her tummy holds the ingredients for a snowman, they're likely to see the humor of the story. no reviews | add a review
