I enjoyed the pop-psychology of [b:A Book About Love|27276407|A Book About Love|Jonah Lehrer|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1463932244s/27276407.jpg|47328267] more. This didn't provide much that I haven't heard elsewhere, although I suppose it's always useful to remember that I will inevitably become bored and uninterested in every relationship I enter. The honeymoon must end and the craving for female Viagra will take over! Womp. A more useful takeaway that the author could have explored more but didn't is that women experience more desire when they pursue and take more agency in their sexual relationships. That comes in on the second to last page, so your guess as to where to take that is as good as mine. Pop science that was easy to digest and raised some great larger philosophical questions more than it gave new scientific facts. Basically, regarding female sexuality there is so much we still don't know. Onward! "Lust, in its most powerful moments, can propel us outside ourselves, outside the world, outside time." I had to rate this five stars because the questions raised are so important. The book was stilted in his jumping around and amount of anecdotal renditions. But the challenge to further inquiry was courageous and vitally important for all social science. Most of his points seem common sense to me: "The Emperor wears no clothes!" However the vested interests, consumed by fear, push so hard as to prolong or preclude our enlightenment. Is that not the most prominent lesson of all history? This same fear is delaying and impeding the study of medicine to treat low libido, as documented in the book. Excellent content. Not thrilled with the delivery. To be fair, it was written by a journalist, so I shouldn't have expected it to be written like other works of non-fiction. Highly recommend if you are a complete novice to the realm of female sexuality. I'd skip it if you are more familiar with the topic. no reviews | add a review
Critically acclaimed journalist Daniel Bergne disseminates the latest scientific research and paints an unprecedented portrait of female lust: the triggers, the fantasies, the mind-body connection (and disconnection), the reasons behind the loss of libido, and, most revelatory, that this loss is not inevitable. Bergner asks: Are women actually the less monogamous gender? Do women really crave intimacy and emotional connection? Are women more disposed to sex with strangers and multiple pairings than either science or society have ever let on? And is "the fairer sex" actually more sexually aggressive and anarchic than men? While debunking the myths popularized by evolutionary psychology, Bergner also looks at the future of female sexuality. Pharmaceutical companies are pouring billions of dollars to develop a "Viagra" for women. But will it ever be released? Or are we not yet ready for a world in which women can become aroused at the simple popping of a pill? Insightful and illuminating, What Do Women Want? is a deeper exploration of Daniel Bergner's provocative New York Times Magazine cover story; it will spark dynamic debates and discussions for years to come.
