So cute! Since Emmett and I first read it it's become a standard in the rotation, introduced the concept of "pretend," and oh it does the best job of selling Piggie and Gerald as kind, appealing friends and their relationship as complex, loving and real. And there's gentle teasing and trying to give the ones you love the things that will make them happy, both of which my son has gotten really into of late, perhaps partly because of this book who knows. This book is about a pig and an elephant who are best friends. Piggie, the pig, acts the a frog the entire book so Elephant becomes scared and doesn't want to be a frog. He doesn't want to eat flies or hop all over the place. Piggie then tells Elephant that it is just pretend. Elephant doesn't know what pretend is until Piggie tells him. One elephant knows what pretending is, he becomes a cow.
This book tells students that they can pretend to be a lot of things and adventure other things. This would be a good book for introducing ways of acting or readers theater. ( )

Piggy is silly and starts to act differently so Gerald has to help try to identify piggy's new identity which is a little confusing to Gerald at first. ( )

Oh my goodness gracious.

Piggie: Everyone pretends.
Gerald: Even grown-up people?
Piggie (with flattened eyebrows): All the time.

Then there's the diversion into Green Eggs and Ham territory...
and then the genius twist that makes Mo Willems so very popular among kids, parents, librarians. ( )
