Read as part of 2014 Hugo Packet. Rather hackneyed steam-punk supernatural tale, complete with airships and loads of gunporn.
Slow to begin, full of clunky prose and outclassed in this field. Gave up about 100 pages in. ( )

A good wrap up to the Grimnoir Chronicle series.  I was satisfied with the ending and yet at the same time I felt like Correia rushed it to fit it into one book.   Faye especially. I liked Faye and yet her growth just didn't quite work for me.   Now Jake Sullivan, he was fully what I had come to expect and he lived up to my expectations. A smart thug. His battle scenes with Toru and others were pretty good.   I am finding it rather tough to write about this book. I enjoyed it and I guess that will have to suffice for this evening. " ( )

A great end to the series. The Author has said that he has no plans to write any more Grimnoir books, but I hope he changes his mind. ( )

This series got better with every installment. The author's skill improved throughout the course of the work. This one had excellent character development to go along with the over-the-top action sequences, which are a hallmark of the series. ( )

A satisfying ending to a really fun trilogy. As a writer, I feel like I can learn a thing or two from the way Correia writes action sequences, and his sense of pacing and storytelling. The audiobook narrator on this series is 5 stars, too. Great entertainment! And I'm happy to see a female character with awesome superpowers. ( )

Book description
Gritty urban fantasy adventure set in an alternate noir 1930s, Book Three in the Grimnoir chronicles.
Only a handful of people in the world know that mankind's magic comes from a living creature, and it is a refugee from another universe. The Power showed up here in the 1850s because it was running from something. Now it is 1933, and the Power's hiding place has been discovered by a killer.
It is a predator that eats magic and leaves destroyed worlds in its wake. Earth is next.
Former private eye, Jake Sullivan, knows the score. The problem is hardly anyone believes him. The world's most capable Active, Faye Vierra, could back him up, but she is hiding from the forces that think she is too dangerous to let live. So Jake has put together a ragtag crew of airship pirates and Grimnoir knights, and set out on a suicide mission to stop the predator before it is too late.
