Something hungry, relentless, and "absolutely terrifying" is surfacing off the California coast (Marc Cameron, New York Timesâ??bestselling author).

A young woman is dragged into the depths of the Pacific by a force of unimaginable strength; deep sea divers descend into the ink-black waters and never return; and when a small fishing boat is capsized and a band of migrants are swallowed up whole, the lone, terrified survivor can only utter three words . . . los diablos rojos.

Professional scuba diver Will Sturman and brilliant oceanographer Valerie Martell know what they're up against. It's something more ferocious than the jaws of a great white shark . . . deadlier and quicker than a shoal of piranha . . . a mass of predators that has evolved over millions of years to perfect their reason to exist: to kill and to feed.

Now, a thousand strong and counting, they're heading toward shallow waters where the prey is easy. For Will and Valerie, it's a race against time to stop the world's oceansâ??and its shoresâ??from turning blood red.

"Brilliantly terrifying . . . Lockwood snaps hold of you and doesn't let go . . . With nerve-tingling suspense, Below is a thriller you won't easily put downâ??or forget." â??Kevin O'Brien, New York Timesâ??bestselling author

"Breathtakingly frightening and hugely entertaining . . . a knockout." â??New Yor

I really enjoyed this novel. It is a very smart, new version of Jaws, which I also enjoyed. In some ways it is better than Jaws because it doesn’t try to do too much. Jaws had a lot of different storylines that seemed to cloud, and in my opinion detract, from the main point of the story - the monster in the sea that is eating people. In Below, Lockwood stays on target. He develops his characters, including his monster in the sea, and educates us about the monster along the way. I felt like everything in Below was possible, which made it all the more thrilling. The story was fast-paced and enjoyable. A great summer read for any beach trip! ( )

I highly enjoyed this book! The short chapters really helped buildup the pace and intensity of the storyline. I also appreciated the level of detail about the biology of the squids and navigational detail. ( )

I received this book for free a while ago and was happy to finally get to read it. I absolutely loved this book! It's about a Humboldt squid(s) attacking and eating people. It's scary because it could actually happen.

WOW!!! What an amazing book! Lockwood lures you in from the first page and keeps reeling till there's no escape. I highly recommend this title to fans of books like Jaws, Jurassic Park, and Fragment. ( )

"Below" is competently written, but just not very interesting. The characters are capable, but utterly forgettable. There's an attempt at emotion, but it's simplistic...not unlike the plot.

I wanted monsters, and got insane squid. ( )

Book description
IN THE BESTSELLING TRADITION OF JAWS,
FROM THE DEPTHS OF THE SEA COMES
A NEW KIND OF TERROR.
In all his years as a professional diver, Will Sturman has never encountered a killing machine more ferocious than the great white shark or as deadly as the piranha. Now, off the coast of California, something is rising from the deep--and multiplying. Voracious, unstoppable, and migrating north, an ungodly life form trailed by a gruesome wake of corpses. With the help of the brilliant and beautiful oceanographer Valerie Martell, Will finds himself in a race against time to stop the slaughter--by a predator capable of devastating the world's oceans.

PRAY IT KILLS YOU QUICKLY.
