(HARD IV)

General: This slow and lyrical arrangement of this well known traditional hymn is not merely a homophonic transcription of the tune, but a rather complex polyphonic version with many interweaving melodies and countermelodies. Lyrical, harmonically rich, and contrapuntally complex.

Tempo: q = 69

Key Areas: A Major, Bb Major, G Major, C Major

LH: Challenges of multiple, distantly related keys. Chromaticism. 3rd Position shifts for Vln1 & Vlc. Vibrato vs. Non-Vibrato playing (notated).

RH: Long lyrical detaché playing throughout

Rhythm: Fierce rhythmic independence is necessary as the parts are rather polyphonic.

Pitch: Frequent harmonic changes and chromatic alterations, as well as several key changes to distant keys could prove to be aurally challenging.

Road Map: Several tempo modifiers present. Rubato would be desirable as well.

Additional Concepts: Grace notes must be taught.

9/10, would program. ( )
