A feisty feline named Cleo narrates this tale of life in a swanky hotel in the hills above the city of Beirut, and the beautiful Mediterranean Sea. "A congenial cat with the brightest disposition and the longest whiskers," Cleo makes friends wherever she goes (although she does occasionally have to hide from some of the visiting children), becoming particularly popular with the director of the annual world music festival held at the hotel. But although life is full for our feline heroine, something is missing... Cleo longs for the companionship of her own kind, and for the chance to give something beautiful to the world...

This Lebanese picture-book, published in Beruit by Dar An-Nahar Publishers, is a charming exploration of one little cat's life. According to the biographical blurb about the author - Roseanne Saad Khalaf is apparently a professor of English and Creative Writing at the American University of Beirut - this is the first of a prospective series about Cleo, so perhaps she will get her wish for companionship, adventure, and purpose in life. I certainly hope so! The artwork, done by Lebanese-born Michèle Standjofski, is appealing, with Cleo making her way through a series of colorful scenes. Although I did find the text a little wordy for a picture-book - I think it would have worked a little better if there had been more of a story, as opposed to a series of descriptions by Cleo - I enjoyed Cleo, the Hotel Cat, and look forward to seeing more work from this author and illustrator. Recommended to young cat lovers (there are cat prints on the back cover!), and to readers looking for Lebanese children's books available in English. ( )
