Gina Geldbach-Hall writes an incredible account of her career as a woman firefighter in Nevada. But her story isn’t just about harrowing adventures, putting her life on the line, schlepping massive pieces of equipment up ladders and over rooftops, although those accounts alone would make a great book. Geldbach-Hall’s story is about also fighting gender discrimination, a threat bigger, hotter and harder to put out than the flames from an inferno.

Firegal is “a woman’s story of empowerment in a man’s world!”

The author moved up the ranks in her lengthy, dedicated career eventually retiring as a Battalion Chief. None of us get where we want to be without setbacks before the successes, without drama before the awards. But most of us don’t also have to endure a hostile work atmosphere, battle not so subtle disrespect from co-workers and rise above both overt and subliminal messages of mediocrity.

The author has crafted a well-written, honest account of what was disgustingly wrong with the male dominated firefighter force in Nevada. A lack of bathroom facilities and showers for the ladies was the least of it. Geldbach-Hall battled ill fitting but critically important equipment, designed for a man’s physique.

With flames licking at her heels, the author took on a singular mission to correct the gender discrimination issue. After years of wrangling Geldbach-Hall was finally victorious in her lawsuit and as such brought about important changes for the Nevada’s women firefighters. ( )

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0985289007, Paperback)

Where there’s smoke, there’s fire- And she’s igniting! Like all children of well-meaning parents, Gina was raised under the impression she could be anything she wanted to be when she grew up. Her choice to become a firefighter lit the spark, fueled by discrimination and her own determination, which created a backdraft in its wake. This is the story of one woman's journey of braving the flames, to ultimately rising from the ashes, finding her own empowerment in a man’s world. Join her on her journey as she not only changes a system but also shares her process of becoming a firegal, a force that is inextinguishable!
