A Rose for Cassie by Brenda Heyward is a contemporary romance featuring a retiring baseball player who meets the woman who could play a pivotal role in his professional and personal future if he can get her to admit there is more going on between them than great chemistry. I found Cassie and Lloyd to be strong characters and their interactions are heated and entertaining. Lloyd’s ability to pick up on Cassie’s insecurities while not making her self-conscious about them shows he’s a caring guy. Lloyd is accustomed to having his own way but when Cassie is directing, she lets him know who is boss. After hours, Lloyd uses gentle persuasion to get Cassie to come around to realizing they are great together. I love that when she makes her emotional breakthrough and breaks down, he simply holds her and pours his love and strength into her. Overall the plot is modern and sophisticated and I enjoyed the glimpse into the sports world and into the world of making commercials. The fact that both lead characters have uncommon careers is another appealing aspect of the novel.

Cassie Chandler is a self-made success story, using her natural abilities to secure a job in marketing and eventually becoming a successful commercial director. Cassie is well known for her attention grabbing and lucrative commercials but she doesn’t really allow people to get close. As a product of the foster system, she’s seen many people come and go from her life. As an adult, she controls how close she gets with anyone. Then Cassie meets third baseman Lloyd Patterson during a game and she’s powerless to fight the feelings he evokes. Lloyd is a divorced father of a teen son and with his career in baseball about to end, he’s looking to start the next chapter of his life with a smart and beautiful woman like Cassie. As they work on an ad campaign together, Cassie and Lloyd grow closer and slowly, Cassie’s walls come down. Cassie still has her demons she needs to fight before she can truly love. Lloyd’s not a patient man but when it comes to Cassie, he’s willing to give her all the time she needs to realize they were made for each other.
