A great read....ideal for starting, enlarging or consolidating your knowledge of the history of England...

Ideal to dip into, or you can read the whole story from cover to cover....from the very beginning until 1990. A mine of information, clearly set out and expressed, this book is scholarly and yet easy to read and entertaining. The writer is clearly fascinated by the great personalities of history and gives moving accounts, always well supported factually, of events such as the executions of Mary, Queen of Scots and Charles I. At the beginning of each major section (e.g. the nineteenth century), he gives an overview which summarises the social history, in particular, of the time in question. 921 pages. ( )
